Horizon Horseback Adventures provides the perfect location for a single-destination riding safari holiday, as well as being the perfect starting point for a Will of Africa adventure travel or a tailor-made riding safari through South Africa. Horizon's emphasis is on horses and horsemanship. Here you will find the widest variety of riding options you are likely to find anywhere in the world.
Horizon Horseback Adventures is situated in the stunning Waterberg Mountains of South Africa's northern Limpopo Province. The Waterberg area is renowned for its diversity of plant and bird life and has recently been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
Laura and Shane Dowinton, who run the ranch at Horizon aided by expert staff, take great pride in the care and quality of their horses. With a herd of more than 80 to choose from, including Boerperds, Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses and cross-breeds, Horizon excels at matching horse and rider. Experienced riders enjoy stimulating rides on intelligent and responsive horses, while novices will build confidence quickly as both guide and mount informally coach them. Guests can join in the daily routine of herding and yard work, checking calving cows or driving a herd between widely-spread pastures.
The ranch offers superb riding: the horses run unshod on sandy soil, and though in places the bush is thick much of the country is open and flat, lending itself to extended canters. Riding through thicker bush and over rocky koppies to finish on a high point for a sundowner is a firm favourite; watching a family of hippo from horseback is always a thrill and swimming the horses is a great way to cool down after a long ride.
Polocross, an amalgam of Polo and Lacrosse, is easy to learn and one of the most exhilarating sports on horseback. Usually one chukka is all it takes to bring out the competitive spirit!
The Horizon farmstead overlooks a beautiful lake with a backdrop of open bushveld. With no TV or newspapers this is the perfect spot to get away from it all. There are three double rooms in the house (each with private facilities), a thatched en-suite rondavel with room enough to accommodate three people sharing if required, and two double-bedroomed lodges overlooking the large lake. A small plunge pool enables guests to cool off on a hot summer's day, while the large colonial veranda overlooking the lake is an ideal spot from which to absorb the peace and beauty of Africa. Horizon also benefits from a spectacular jetty right down on the main dam, with sunbeds which provide sunseekers and fans of a sundowner drink with an ideal spot from which to soak up the atmosphere of the African bush.
Horizon's second love is food. Mealtimes are irreverent, sociable and sumptuous affairs during which time the day's adventures and misadventures are recounted with great delight.
Horizon is ideally situated 24kms from Vaalwater, within easy driving reach of Entabeni Game Reserve. A combined holiday taking you to all of these operations will bring you the best that the Waterberg has to offer. Additionally, Horizon is offering set-date horseback safaris with Saddlebag Safaris
